Client Notes
Deliver a highly sustainable design with structural and material integrity that's timeless, connected to place, and human scale. As a training center for the Oregon National Guard and a community center for Polk County, the facility must be welcoming, humane, durable, and secure.
Designer Notes
Connecting to the land in both building and site design, the center's assembly hall offers sweeping views of the stunning rural landscape. The interior of the assembly hall filters daylight from skylights through a wood framework reminiscent of the area's wooden barns, but deployed in a highly ordered rhythm appropriate for the Guard’s drills and ceremonies. Addressing the client's sustainability goals, the center is on target for a 66-68% energy-use reduction relative to buildings of similar size and use.
