Amelie Reynaud, AIA, Associate Principal at Hacker, served as Jury Chair for the 2022 AIA Charleston Design Awards. The in-person event took place on November 4th at the historic American Theater in iconic downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Other jurors included Allison Bryan, AIA, of Open Studio Collective, Balázs Bognár, AIA, of Kengo Kuma & Associates, Chandra Robinson of Lever Architecture, and Sophia Xiao-fan Austrins of Colloqate.

The jurors reviewed 42 project submissions across six categories, including Large Commercial, Small Commercial, Interior Architecture, Residential, and Preservation and Adaptive Reuse. Jurors had the opportunity to individually review each project submission and then deliberate collectively with the entire jury.

Project submissions displayed consistent and strong adherence to the regional vernacular of the South Carolina Low Country, the geographic and cultural region along South Carolina's coast, which is influenced by the history of the region as well as the climate and landscape. Jurors responded agreeably to projects successful in creating architecture of and for this specific place.

At the awards ceremony, Elissa Morrison, AIA Charleston President, and Amelie Reynaud, Jury Chair, awarded 14 projects across the six categories, including two Honor Awards, eight Merit Awards, and four Citations.

AIA Charleston Design Awards Jury Chair and Jury: Amelie Reynaud, Chandra Robinson, Sophia Xiao-fan Austrins, Allison Bryan, Balázs Bognár

"AIA Charleston has a long-standing tradition of recognizing a broad range of architecture activity that exemplifies the values of the South Carolina Low Country and improves the quality of the built environment in the communities we serve. The triennial award program seeks to highlight the diverse range of project types that exist within the region. The AIA believes that awards programs should be carefully structured so that the selection and recognition of honorees elevates the general quality of architectural practice, establishes a standard of excellence against which all Architects can measure performance, and informs the public of the importance of design."
