Peng Wang | Solo Art Exhibition
Peng Wang | Solo Art Exhibition
A gallery reception showcasing the sculptural works, drawings, and paintings by Hacker staff member, Peng Wang.
Peng relocated to Portland, Oregon, during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. New to the Pacific Northwest, he spent his first winter finding ways to fill his time and bring color into the isolated and often gray, rainy days. Peng began to find joy in reimagining found objects around his apartment, such as a tissue box. After time spent dreaming and scheming the potential for the empty tissue box, he began to sketch ideas, first taking pencil to paper, then sourcing found images where he would collect and generate mood boards, to ultimately construction, where he would sculpt and build onto the tissue box with paper mâché before adding color with paint.
His first sculpture, #002, was finalized after a few weeks, standing roughly 10 inches in diameter. Since #002, Peng has standardized his sculptures to include a 5x5x5-inch box, adapting rules for dimensions, materials, and concepts, which he termed "cubes universe". What started as a pastime has become a form of expression for Peng. Through deconstruction and reform, he explores geometry and design language. Peng has since created nearly twenty characters, each with a defining personality and emotions inspired by many facets of Peng's personal experiences, including music, pictures, people, other artists, his feelings, and dreams.
Peng Wang | Solo Art Exhibition is on display thru December 29, 2023.

ARTIST STATEMENT
“One winter night, I got this idea of making myself a little paper mâché creature to bring in some joy to my place. More sculptures with different personalities were made since then, and the design language formed gradually under the concept of “a face with closed eyes in a cube”. Later on I started to deconstruct and reform the shape, exploring more possibilities of the given geometry, which is super exciting. Each character is a unique piece with emotions. The faces are expressionless, but leave a lot more to the imagination of what’s in their mind. I hope this collection brings you joy too.”
We look forward to seeing you for our gallery reception highlighting staff member, Peng Wang / Solo Art Exhibition.
A couple of notes regarding logistics:
Travel to District Office:
By Car: Unfortunately parking in our district is challenging. There is metered parking in the blocks around the building. If you are lucky, there are a few spots directly in front of our office. Consider downloading the Parking Kitty app to pay for the parking, or you can pay via credit card at the pay kiosk. If you need disability accommodations email inquiries@hackerarchitects.com and we will reach out to you with options. The closest pay-for lot is https://parkabm.com/facilities/weatherly-building-surface-lot/
By Transit: The Portland Streetcar and the #6 Bus drop off directly in front of our building. Visit Tri-Met for more details.
By Bike: We have secure on-site bike parking. You will need to text Sarah Hacker (503-816-9511) to give you access to the bike parking.
Other:
When you arrive at the building, an attentive Hacker employee will be there to welcome you. The door to the building is about 1/3 of the way down the block on the right if you are heading south on MLK. It’s not well marked until you are upon it.
There will not be a list of people that RSVPed at the door – you are free to stop by or invite a friend if you didn’t RSVP. RSVPs were only to give us a rough magnitude of order to anticipate beverages and snacks needed.
On that note, there will be alcoholic (beer/wine) and a variety of non-alcoholic drinks and light snacks.
Please email inquiries@hackerarchitects.com for additional questions. Thank you.
