Client Notes
Heal the relationship between the college and neighborhood by engaging students and the community in creating new buildings that serve the needs of all. Historically, community colleges do not have student unions or an abundance of space outside the classroom; providing this hub will give students a greater sense of connection to the campus and ownership over their academic experience. Renovations and additions to the existing Library and Student Services building—with a focus on technology, collaboration, and diverse learning environments—bring these facilities into the 21st century.
Designer Notes
Community and student input informed this inclusive and non-institutional design. The Student Union features a lively food court open to anyone, a large living room full of natural light and warm materials, and glass-surrounded student meeting rooms. Holistic sustainability informed every design decision, resulting in 81% better energy efficiency for Cascade Hall compared to other buildings of its type and size, and 41% better efficiency for the Student Union.
