This renovation transformed a NW Portland warehouse into a dynamic work space for Downstream, a multi-disciplinary design firm. The design balances Downstream’s desire for increased openness with the need for semi-enclosed studio environments, flanked by limitless display space for visual thinking.
A field of large staggered wall planes is inserted within the existing columns of the warehouse to define studio areas. Running the opposite direction of the white display walls are low Oregon White Oak cabinet blocks that define movement and provide storage for studios, conference rooms, and kitchen.
The field of staggered studio spaces is populated by a series of custom work tables that can be arranged as needed to adapt to changing project teams. Every team has generous wall space for displaying work, communal work tables for collaboration, a human-scaled sense of enclosure appropriate for the size of the team, plenty of daylight, and views through the office to the neighborhood outside.
