University of Oregon
Eugene, Oregon
65,000 sf
Completed in 2009

Working with a large and diverse user group, Hacker designed a new College of Education Complex that accomplished specific goals: visual continuity between the new and existing buildings, specialized learning spaces, accessibility, sustainability, and a sense of dignity befitting the various professions of education and human services. The project included significant renovations to existing buildings and a 65,000 sf new HEDCO Education Building.

The specialized learning spaces are critically important to the function and design of the complex of buildings. During the programming and design process, a room by room description of the program needs followed a series of design committee and user meetings. A series of innovative spaces were developed to support the College’s vision.

The project also involved a careful analysis of program distribution between the existing buildings and the new building. Particular attention was paid to Universal Access and to supporting the diverse population that comprises the College of Education, exemplifying the College of Education’s mission: “Making Educational and Social Systems Work for All.”
