Completed in 2004
Hacker and Walker Macy Landscape Architects provided master planning for UC Santa Cruz’s Arts Division. Looking down across a meadow to Monterey Bay, the Arts Division is located on one of the most powerful positions on the campus and is the primary location for community-campus interface through exhibits, musical performances and other public events. The goal of the master plan is to define a place that honors the vibrant identity of the Santa Cruz arts community and provides an exceptional place for learning and creating.
The Arts Division Area Plan will accommodate a growing enrollment and complement existing venues. This includes plans for new classroom, labs and studio space, a new gallery and a 1,200 to 1,500 seat theater for stage productions that will serve both the campus and the Santa Cruz Community. Additional considerations are alternative transportation and parking solutions. By protecting primary landscape elements and focusing on the relationship between interior building spaces and the surrounding landscape, the connection of people to the campus setting is strengthened, and the experience of exploration and discovery is enhanced.
